Of late I have been thinking of this concept of job satisfaction, and I realized that there are very few people that I know who are really satisfied with their jobs. This includes those with the big salaries and fancy offices. Often it seems that most of us have made peace with that we are doing but that does not necessarily mean that we are satisfied. So I did some thinking and realized that there is a fundamental difference between our 'work' and our 'jobs'.
While our work is easily defined as what we do for a living, our jobs are more complicated. A job includes much more than just the work we do. It encompasses various other dimensions like- the company we work for, the salary we get, our colleagues and our equations with them, our boss etc. And lucky (and rare) is the man (or woman) who finds all of these factors to his/her liking.
Yet we are told that job satisfaction is a reality. I, however, feel that it is a chimera hoisted onto an unsuspecting corporate workforce by the HR fraternity. The game plan probably is to keep us involved and interested in our jobs (however annoying they may be) and strive for this elusive state of being know as Job Satisfaction.
